Kiss the Joy

Kiss the Joy as it Flies
Oil on Canvas

Two 30″ x 24″ sections

This painting started with sketchbook drawings done when I was visiting my father. He had a very old book with poetry by William Blake, that included this:

Eternity

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the wingéd life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity’s sunrise.

It struck a chord with me, inspiring a painting about letting go, allowing freedom and not holding on too tightly.

I started with sketchbook drawings of some leaves that I picked up after they were blowing around my yard and in my driveway one early winter morning.
