Happy Monday!
This week I am working on several miniatures for my “Lifelines” series using natural woodgrain and translucent layers of oil paints. For really tiny paintings, it is easier to work outdoors in natural daylight, but there are ways to brighten things up inside the studio too. On a dark indoor morning like today, having a swing-arm daylight lamp with a magnifier was surprisingly helpful for some of the tiniest touches.

I work on several of these little gems at once, because layers often need to be left alone to dry, so none of the minis are finished yet, but then in a week or so they will all be done at once! I can’t wait to add the final oil glazes on this beautiful walnut wood ❤️

There are only three weeks until the 10th annual A

There are only three weeks until the 10th annual AFC (@ArtistsforConservation) Festival kick-off at VanDusen Botanical Garden, in Vancouver.

This photo was taken after packing up artwork for pick-up a couple of weeks ago, I sent off a painting that was selected for the exhibition, hopeful that the event would be able to go ahead safely at this challenging time. The latest update has now confirmed that they have permission to proceed with approval from regional health authorities. Many festival activities can probably be expected to look a little different from other years, but huge thanks to the organizers for taking all of the steps to ensure a safe event for all.

The exhibit opens at the AFC Festival in Vancouver, BC October 1 - 4th
All provincial health protocols will be followed.

This time next year we will be setting up for the

This time next year we will be setting up for the 2021 ArtWalk festival, but this year they are celebrating in a different way! Thanks to @lcartwalk for the invitation to participate in a special community project. The chair I painted was picked up on Monday and I have no idea (yet) where it has been installed with others, spaced six feet apart. They are in public spaces in 14 Okanagan communities.
You can help us find them! When you see ArtWalk chairs in the Okanagan, take a selfie with the group, and tag #artwalkartchairs !

At this time in late summer and even into the fall, dahlia keep getting bigger even after many of the other flowers are gone. They stand tall in the garden while the weather starts getting cooler at night, and in the fall when rain and wind try to blow them over. For that reason, they are often considered symbols of resilience and strength. I also see them as symbols of patience because of the many petals, the beautiful geometry, and the way they grow slowly over the entire summer and then finally burst into incredible blooms.

This detail preview is a section from the top half of a Muskoka chair I painted for the Lake Country ArtWalk committee. This photo was taken before the final clear coat, but now the chair is all completely finished, so I will take more photos this afternoon.

Thanks @lcartwalk for the opportunity to paint a chair to contribute to the 2020 Lake Country ArtWalk community project. It is so great that the ArtWalk committee found new ways to support Arts in the Okanagan. The huge and truly amazing annual festival had to be cancelled this year because of Covid-19 and Provincial Health guidelines, but they will be back next year! In the meantime, the group is still going strong, introducing this creative project to mark ArtWalk 2020 and to provide unique art experiences for the public. Thirty to fort-five wooden Muskoka-style chairs were distributed to artists in the Okanagan Valley. They were asked to turn each chair into a work of art, for installation in various communities thoughout the Okanagan Valley, in groups of three or four, placed six feet apart. They invite a “coming together, but still staying safe.”
